Northwest Arctic Borough School District Kivalina School

RSA utilized energy-efficient mechanical and electrical systems for Kivalina’s new off-grid school campus engineered for arctic climates, low maintenance, and long-term sustainability.

Innovative Off-Grid School Design

RSA Engineering provided full mechanical and electrical design and construction administration services for the Kivalina Replacement School, a remote, self-contained facility built seven miles inland from the village due to erosion concerns.

This multi-building project includes a K-12 school, wastewater treatment plant, mechanical plant, teacher housing, and storage facilities. RSA’s design addressed arctic conditions, energy efficiency, and system independence as well as incorporating heat recovery, water circulation, and DDC systems to ensure reliable operations in an off-grid environment.

Off-Grid Infrastructure

RSA designed a full mechanical and electrical system network connecting the school, WWTP, and mechanical building, complete with fire protection, glycol piping, and bulk utilities for remote operation.

Energy-Efficient Systems

With DDC controls, VFD-driven pumps, and energy recovery ventilation, RSA’s systems reduce power usage while maintaining reliable heating and water service in extreme arctic conditions.
